Just salt, sun and wind, skimmed from the surface of the ponds.

Salinas del Alemán works salt pans at Isla Cristina, on the coast of Huelva, where salt has been made since 1954.

Their flor de sal is skimmed from the surface of the crystallising ponds, the thin layer that forms first, and nothing is added: salt, sun and wind. It is soft and white and dissolves at once, which makes it a finishing salt rather than a cooking salt.

We chose it for our boxes because it is one simple ingredient from a named place, packed in reusable, fully recyclable containers. Their own advice is to use it as a last touch on salads, grilled meat and fish, or a chocolate dessert.

What makes them different

Five things worth knowing

  1. Salt has been made on these salt pans, at Isla Cristina on the Huelva coast, since 1954.
  2. The flor de sal is skimmed from the surface of the crystallising ponds, the thin layer that forms first.
  3. Nothing is added: the only ingredient is flor de sal.
  4. By the producer's account it has less sodium chloride than ordinary salt, so it tastes less sharp and more flavourful.
  5. It comes in reusable, fully recyclable packaging.
