Why
I was born in Spain, and I have been to almost every corner of it: from Galicia to Andalucía, Madrid, the Comunidad Valenciana and the islands. What fascinates me most is how different it is from one place to the next.
My father always said there is no better place in the world to eat. I have since lived in several countries on several continents, and I have to admit he was right.
What I miss most is Christmas: the food made by local producers, not the mass-market version. That is why SpanishSecrets starts with Christmas.
We are not trying to offer everything from Spain. We would rather offer a few things we can vouch for.
How we choose
Every product here has to pass the same questions.
- Who made it, and where? We only sell products from a named maker in a named place. You will find both on every product page.
- Is it what it says it is? Where a product has a protected origin (IGP), we show the seal. We list the ingredients and allergens of every item before you buy.
- Do we trust the people behind it? We buy directly from the makers, not through wholesalers, and we look into who is behind each producer.
- Would we give it as a gift? We only choose products we would be happy to give.
The makers
Four makers stand behind our first collection.
- La Colchona, Estepa, Sevilla The house that invented the Estepa mantecado, baking since 1850.
- Laura Colomina Masiá, Jijona, Alicante Turrón made by the children and grandchildren of master turroneros, in the heart of Jijona.
- Pastelerías Manuel Segura, Daroca, Zaragoza Six generations of pastry makers in Daroca, Aragón, since 1874.
- Salinas del Alemán, Isla Cristina, Huelva Flor de sal from the salt pans of Isla Cristina, Huelva, worked since 1954.
How an order works
Our first collection comes as a first edition of 50 Navidad boxes in total. Orders close on Sunday 8 November. We assemble the boxes by hand and deliver by 4 December, in time for Sinterklaas. Everything ships from The Hague.
Who we are
SpanishSecrets is a family business in The Hague. We choose the products, work with the producers, prepare the orders and answer your messages ourselves. There are no fixed roles: the work moves between us depending on the week.
Small by choice
We are building SpanishSecrets slowly, and we want to keep it personal. The 50-box limit is a choice, not a stock number.
